Parawing is a new and exciting water sport that combines elements of wingfoiling, kitesurfing, paragliding and downwind foiling. It offers a unique experience where you use a lightweight, portable wing (parawing) to get up to speed on a hydrofoil board, and then you can easily pack up the wing to surf the waves and pack up the parawing when you go upwind again.

What is a parawing?

A parawing is a small, non-inflatable wing that resembles a small parachute or kite. It is attached to a boom with bridles, similar to kitesurfing, and catches the wind to provide lift and propulsion. Unlike traditional wingfoils, parawings are designed to pack up quickly and be unpackable.

Advantages of parawing foiling

Efficient downwind experience - The parawing allows you to get upwind and then pack up and ride without anything in your hand to interfere with riding the waves

Easy handling - The small para wing is generally easy to pack up and fit inside the vest and you can easily take 2 wings out on the water if the wind is very variable

Upwind to the wind - Despite its compact design, the parawing offers impressive power and takes you upwind, making it possible to reach remote locations and catch waves effectively.

What you need to get started?

To start parawing foiling, the following equipment is recommended:

Parawing: Choose a wing that suits your weight and the prevailing wind conditions. A larger wing is more stable against a smaller one

Hydrofoil board: A board that has a downwind design or mid size board that moves quickly in the water. A foil with
high AR and large wingspan and has a good lift makes it easier as a beginner. A ska pump wing can also help with the first attempts.

Protective equipment: Always wear a life jacket and consider using a helmet for extra safety. Leash for the board and many people use a leash for the parawing. Additional equipment that you need and may need is a rope for the boom and a harness. A kite knife can be useful if you get your lines tangled and the parawing starts to sink.

Where can you practice parawing foiling?

Parawing foiling can be practiced in a variety of locations, including lakes, seas and ponds. It is important to choose a place with suitable wind conditions, check weather apps and places where they roll well not so breaking waves and good for parawing.
